Meet Nancy: Helping Bring Dorchester Together

If you’ve attended a community meeting, partnered on a local initiative, or worked to improve outcomes for children and families in Dorchester County, there’s a good chance you’ve crossed paths with Nancy Shockley.

Born and raised in Dorchester County, Nancy serves as Local Management Board Director/ENOUGH Manager of Moving Dorchester Forward. She believes lasting change happens when people listen to each other and work together. Her role is to build relationships, connect ideas, and help partners turn a shared vision into action.

What first drew you to this work?
I always wanted to help people. Over the years, I’ve worked in juvenile services, mental health, and special education, which gave me a holistic view of what families are facing and how important it is to meet people where they are.

How do you build trust with residents and partners?
Show up. Listen. Be honest. And then repeat. Trust is built through consistently showing up.

Can you share a moment that reminded you why this work matters?
Through one of our poverty-reduction programs, we watched someone overcome significant barriers to employment due to a criminal record. It started with a volunteer opportunity that became a job. Then a promotion. Within about a year, their life looked completely different. Watching someone move from uncertainty to stability was incredibly powerful.

What are you most proud of so far?
The engagement and collaboration that went into developing our Community Plan for Children, Youth, and Families. (See more in “Working Together for Better Outcomes” story below.) Creating it required community residents, organizations, agencies, and community leaders to come together around a shared vision for Dorchester County. It wasn’t easy, but it showed what is possible when we come together to work toward common goals.

 What excites you most about what’s ahead?
The opportunity to create lasting change. We know that the earliest years of a child’s life have an enormous impact on future success. Strong early childhood experiences, stable housing, access to healthcare, quality childcare, and family support can change a child’s life. That’s why so much of our work focuses on prevention and early intervention. The results may not happen overnight, but the impact can last for generations.

How do you recharge outside of work?
Music, boating, and spending time with family, especially my six grandchildren, who all live here in Dorchester County and inspire this work every day.
